a museum of the people -- the country weekly newspaper office and photographs
This museum was opened in 1976.
It presents a working newspaper office, with an 1885 printing press, 1910 linotype machines, job printing presses, and all of the other accoutrements of a country weekly newspaper. The newspaper equipment stands pretty much as it was when beloved editor Rudy Senft died unexpectedly in 1974. He had headed the paper since 1940.

Rudy headed the paper from 1940 until his death in 1974.
These photographs are from his daughter June, who says they were taken in 1944. Given the date, they were taken in a prior location, east of the Square. The office did not move into its most recent location until 1960. |
