table rock's TIME LINE
2015 saw the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Table Rock Historical Society, the 100th anniversary of the building housing the Pioneer Museum, and the 150th anniversary of the birth of the first white baby in Pawnee County, a child of Robert and Elizabeth Turner, who built the Turner Log cabin that is now one of our museums.
It was the sesquicentenniel of the Pony Express, a route of which ran through Table Rock. This was recounted in the obituary of Ira Draper of Dawson, who died in 1943 at age 93. Other dates are impending. |

160th anniversarty - election for the pawnee county seat. tABLE rOCK PEOPLE SAY, "WE WAS ROBBED!" (1856)
THERE WERE TWO TABLE ROCK SITES ON THE ELECTION, THE "TOWN" SITE OF TABLE ROCK AND THE FIRST SITE ON THE HILL JUST EAST OF THE RIVER. THERE WAS A THIRD SITE, ON TURKEY CREEK. ONE OF THE TABLE ROCK SITES ONE, BUT THE ELECTION RESULTS WERE THEN DECLARED INVALID FOR LACK OF A SIGNATURE. BY THE TIME ANOTHER ELECTION WAS HELD, THE TURKEY CREEK PEOPLE HAD PERSUADED THE MAJORITY TO VOTE FOR THEM. OF COURSE, THE ORIGINAL STORY I HEARD WAS THAT THE COURTHOUSE WAS A LOG CABIN BUILT IN TABLE ROCK, AND ONE NIGHT SOME HOOLIGANS CAME OVER, HOOKED UP A TEAM OF MULES, AND DRUG IT TO PAWNEE CITY. I SUPPOSE THAT'S THE TRUE STORY. YEAH.
