The founders of the church are said to have been Joseph Reuter, John Dufek, and Peter Miller.  John Dufek is buried in the Bohemian Cemetery east of Table Rock and Peter Miller is buried in Lincoln.

It was Joseph Reuter who donated the cemetery along with the rest of the three acres on which it sat.

The church was originally St. Wenceslaus but, probably sometime in the 1890s, was renamed St. John the Baptist then simply St. John's Church.
Civil War veteran James O'Brien. He enlisted in Company L of the 15th Illinois Infantry.  His company and two others were consolidated into the Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, where he was in Company F.
