According to various genealogists whose trees on Ancestry.com include John Barrett, he was born in Salisbury, Vermont in 1826 to John and Phebe Barrett, ages 28 and 18 respectively. He was the oldest of six, with two brothers (Hiram and Oscar) and three sisters (Amelia, Julia, and Eveline).
John married Melvina Carrie Johnson in New York in 1846. By the time he mustered into service in August 1862, Carrie had born 8 of their nine children; the last was born in 1867. "Deenick160" has a Barrett family tree that has much information.

a little story
Do you have any family stories or mementos of a long-ago ancestor? Sometimes even the smallest snippet or the most common item is of the utmost value.
Earline Shaw, a granddaughter of John & Melvina's daughter Carrie has as a treasured possession a cane that John carved. Earline says that when the grave of John's daughter Carrie needed to be moved out of a pathway in the 1950s, Earline's father stepped in to pay for the move, and the cane was an unexpected gift for that. In his old age, he passed the cane on to Earline. Earline has not yet decided who to pass her treasure to.
When Earline told us of her great grandfather's cane, we asked for a picture, and asked that she be included holding it. She sent us several pictures of the cane. It's beautiful at its full length, but closer pictures show beautiful carved detail. And then she shared the requested picture with her holding it.

And here is Earline, descendant of Civil War veteran John Franklin Barrett, holding what was once a mere piece of wood:
is he in this photo?
This very special photograph was taken in Table Rock in 1887. John Barrett lived here at that time. Is he one of the men in the picture? Almost certainly. But no names are affixed to the photo. Some of the men can be identified based on other photographs of them. Which do you think is John Barrett?

It looks like he is on the right, front row, on his knees 2nd from the right. (That is believed to be 2nd Lt. Adam Allinson on the far right.) Take a closer at the picture and see what you think.
