HANNA BROTHERS SHOPS
hanna brothers meat market

Hanna Brothers Meat Market. Looks like the brickyard chimney off in the background. Photo from the family collection of Ella Blecha, and shared by Bob and Fran Blecha. They believe the adults are Frank & Mary (Karas) Hanna, and the little boy is most likely their oldest son, Charlie. Fran explains, "Frank & Mary got married in 1881. As you can read from Frank's obit. in 1882 they moved to Boone County, Nebraska, but six years later they moved back to Table Rock. Their oldest son, Charles, was born Apr 5, 1884, and William was born Sep 3, 1885, in Boone County. The photo is not dated; but if taken circa 1890-91, Charlie would have been 6-7 years old, and he sure resembles older photos that we have of Charlie."
Fran added that this photo was in the collection of Bob's mom, Ella. She had a lot of old Karas family photos that belonged to her dad, Martin Karas.
Photo 1466.
Where was the Hanna Brothers Meat Market in the photo above? Perhaps it was in the first wooden building in this photo, Photo 259. This is the south side of the square. The building in the foreground was replaced in 1916 by the Lincoln Hotel Block (hotel, theater, retail store). The first wooden building has an empty lot to its left, has the same window/door configuration as above, and on its other side is a shorter building painted dark. Also, since this is the south side of the square, the brickyard chimney could have been seen from that empty lot.
Hanna Brothers butcher shop
Photo 187, undated, identifies this as Hana Brothers butcher shop. (Hana, not Hanna). The brothers -- presumably the men behind the counter, each with a knife in hand -- are not identified. The man on the right with the ice tongs is John Nemechek, a co-owner of Nemechek Brothers, which sold dry goods and groceries.
Where was this? It may be the wooden building or it may be in the retail space now occupied by J. K. Windows, on the west side of the theater.

Enjoy a slide show of the details of photo 187:
Terry Hunt Korell, a descendent of a pioneer Table Rock family, the Purcells, provided this picture of a promotional plate from a Hanna Brothers store. It is Photo 388. I'm not sure if it was for this store, but here it is:
