the hanna/hana family
Is it Hanna or Hana?
FIRST, a discussion of Hanna versus Hana. It appears that these are different spellings for the same family. Genealogist Fran Blecha has offered an explanation of what she and her husband Bob have found in their research:
To answer your question of the spelling of Hanna ... in the old country it was spelled Hana. As I look at the family tree, I see that there is no consistency as the generations developed. Dolores Sochor helped me piece members of this family together. She has asked me to research the spelling, and there really is no explanation ... as is the case with many Czech names. I have added the names to findagrave as I have researched the spelling.

Fran Blecha has given this additional discussion: Josef and Marie (Karas) Hana were the original parents, married in 1853 in Bohemia, and they were the parents of eight children, six of whom were born in Bohemia and came to America, arriving at New York on June 18, 1870. I have been able to locate burials of six of the eight children, but haven't found James (b. May 8, 1856; d. July 4, 1918) and don't know who the eighth child was. I have linked the six that I found on findagrave, but I see that Joseph, Jr., buried at Petersburg, NE, has not yet been linked (and will be asking that it be done).
Hanna Brothers Meat Market. Photo from the family collection of Ella Blecha, and shared by Bob and Fran Blecha. They believe the adults are Frank & Mary (Karas) Hanna, and the little boy is most likely their oldest son, Charlie. Fran explains, "Frank & Mary got married in 1881. As you can read from Frank's obit. in 1882 they moved to Boone County, Nebraska, but six years later they moved back to Table Rock. Their oldest son, Charles, was born Apr 5, 1884, and William was born Sep 3, 1885, in Boone County. The photo is not dated; but if taken circa 1890-91, Charlie would have been 6-7 years old, and he sure resembles older photos that we have of Charlie."
Fran added that this photo was in the collection of Bob's mom, Ella. She had a lot of old Karas family photos that belonged to her dad, Martin Karas.

Fran points out that Edd Hanna's 1945 obituary said that he had carried on a business in the old Community Bank building for many years. (That is the building on the west side of the theater, now occupied by J. K. Windows.)
