the nick & marie
goodenkauf family
There is SO MUCH more to tell about the Goodenkauf family. This is not their story. This is only a tiny collection of pictures that have surfaced or been provided by family members.

a remembrance
The obituary of Nicholas Goodenkauf ended with a summing up of what kind of person he was, in words that many of us would hope for. This is from the March 13, 1931 edition of the Table Rock Argus. They were penned by long time editor Frank Taylor, who had become editor in 1885 and was by 1931 coming to end of his own days.

meet the nick & marie goodenkauf family
Delphine's descendant Wayne Knippelmeyer added in December 2015,
The most amazing thing about the picture is that they raised 13 children to adulthood. George was not born when this picture was taken. When I look through the cemetery records of our church from that time period I see young mothers, mother and child a few days apart, children through their teens. One family lost 4 children in 8 years. Then the family name disappeared from the records. I guess they moved on. It is hard to imagine the loss of that many children. |
autographs
What fun! Wayne Knippelmeyer ran across pictures of six pages from Delphine's autograph book! Now you can see the handwriting of some of her brothers and sisters in the picture above.
You can click on pages of the gallery at the right to get a larger version, but full-sized pages will be put with the people below. |
nick & marie with son emil
Emil was a World War 1 veteran. His name is on the memorial in the park. He probably went in 1917. If that is the right year, then Nick (born in 1854) would have been 64 and Marie (born in 1862) would have been 56, and Emil (born in 1888) would have been 29.
nick goodenkauf at the 1st table rock train depot
Photo 953. Nick Goodenkauf is identified as the man marked #2. When was this picture taken? Unknown. But we know Nick was born in 1854, and that this train depot existed from 1871 to 1892. How old does Nick look, and use 1892 as a cut off, and you have your "Circa [insert date]."

a letter to delphine when she was 10
Delphine's grandson Wayne Knippelmeyer shared this letter, which Delphine received from a friend in Montana in 1900, when Delphine was about 10. Wayne does not know who Maude Gibson was, how old she was, or how she came to know Delphine, but it is an interesting letter with the mention of studying at home and keeping papa's books.
