the werner family
The Werner family took root when Joseph Werner came to Table Rock in 1867.
Here is an account of their pioneering days by Joseph's daughter Matilda Werner Fritch, written in 1939 in conjunction with a history of the Bunker Hill neighborhood. Mathilda Werner Fritch wrote about her father Joseph Werner. Here is a brief summary so that this account can be found by searching words. Joseph Werner was Bohemian born (1841) and came here in 1867, where he lived out his life. He was a cabinet maker, and made the coffin for the first child buried in the Bohemian Cemetery. He married Matilda Novak in 1870. She was a Czech orphan whose foster parents were Mr. and Mrs. “Zelenke” (also Zelenka?). Ms. Fritch tells of her family’s pioneering days. She mentions his nearest neighbor, Peter Foale. She cites people that he helped get a start, giving the names as “Blecha, Shimek, Dymacek, and John Fritz.” A Roberts family lived nearby and came to live woth them a while after a tornado took their roof off, leaving them with the rain pouring in. She mentions grasshoppers, droughts and in detail describes regular prairie fires, and floods. Here is the history as she wrote it: |

Photo 663. This photo is "Joe Werner's farm, Bunker Hill." Joseph Werner was probably the only Josef Werner in the Table Rock area, and Josef Werner who came from Czechoslovakia lived in Bunker Hill. Bunker Hill was a vibrant farming neighborhood north of Table Rock, often referred to as "North Table Rock."
Is this the farm of Josef Werner who died in 1900? Probably.
Is the man Josef Werner? Probably. His son Frank appears to have been clean shaven. Is that Matilda, his wife to his left? She certainly looks to be in charge? Are those two of the three daughters to the right. One would assume so.

Back of Photo 663. Eva Linn, mother of Ines Madden, may have been a neighbor.
The original is fuzzy. Close ups don't show much.

Photo 43 - A picture of Frank Werner with his sisters is above. Here he is with some other men -- friends or relatives....
This little discussion of Joseph Werner's son Frank is elsewhere on this website, too. Frank reportedly neither married nor had children.
