Joseph Vrtiska the third oldest child of John & Mary (Smrcka) Vrtiska was born in the village of Nemisel, Tabor, Bohemia At the age of 20, he left Bohemia to come to America. He embarked at Bremen, Germany on the ship "The Amelia" on Nov 15, 1866. This trip was to last for 3 months.They encountered a storm at sea, and it was March 5, 1867 when he landed in New York. From New York He went to Chicago where his brother John resided. The two of them came to Pawnee County, Nebraska where they homesteaded land. On Oct 3, 1870 Joseph married Theresa Wenzl in Nebraska City, Nebraska. After their marriage they lived on the land Joseph had homesteaded. 1 1/2 miles east of Steinauer, Nebraska. They lived on this place 43 years. They first made their home in a 1 room log cabin with 2 windows and a door. Later they built a two story house with 12 rooms in which they reared 10 children. 5 boys and 5 girls. This comes from the Vrtiska Family History 1802-19 |

Theresie was born in Neuwallisdorf, Bohmen, Bohemia which is now called New Wallisdorf in the Czech Republic situated about 35 to 40 miles west and a little south of the Czech capital of Prauge (Praha). She came to America with her family at the age of 12 and lived on a homestead two miles north of Steinauer, Nebraska. On October 3, 1870 Joseph & Theresie were married in Nebraska City, Nebraska. After their marriage, they lived on the land Joseph had homesteaded, 1 1/2 miles east of steinauer, Nebraska. They lived on this place for 43 years. They first made their home in a one room log cabin with two windows and a door. Later they built a two story house with 12 rooms in which they reared ten children. 5 girls and 5 boys were born to this couple. |

Jerry & Sandy Vrtiska found this in an old family album. It is Nicholas Gottlieb Steinaer (1872-1909) and Mary Agnes Vrtiska (1871-1963). They had at least one child, Ernest (1896-1986), who married Frances Drucker Steinauer (1897-1931) and had at least six children, born between 1918 and 1928. Nicholas and Mary Agnes, Ernest and Frances, are buried in St. Anthony's Cemetery near Steinauer, Nebraska.
