J. C. Beck was born in Pennsylvania. He married Alice McKessie in 1884 and had three children, Laura, Carl, and Ella. His obituary, October 10, 1930:

There is the grave of an Ella Smith in the Evergreen Cemetery, an Ella who was born in 1886. Is this J. C. and Alice's daughter?
