A story about early pioneer settlement, horsethieves and also about john gere
In the July 26, 1900 edition of the Argus was an article containing the recollections of an early settler about his life here. They include his recollection about the 1868 lynchings of horse thieves and a man who nursed one of them who had been shot. He also talked about John N. Gere, the first Civil War veteran buried in the Table Rock Cemetery. His stone says "Killed by Indians." He was killed in Kansas, and his body brought here.
