table rock community club inaugurates new awards in 2025
community impact -- for impact in a single area
shining star -- for diverse volunteer activity
FIRST AWARDS TO SPUT TURNBULL, PAUL NIMMICH, & SUZANNE ELLIS
The Table Rock Community Club has instigated a Community Impact award, which comes with a trophy and $100. The first well-deserved recipients were Sput Turnbull, cook and manager at the Table Rock Senior Center, and Paul Nimmich, a volunteer there. Both are from Pawnee City. The awards were presented in front of a packed house during the Senior Center’s famed Fried Chicken Day. Plates of crispy tender fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and peas had come streaming out of the kitchen in the moments before the surprise announcement. Most diners had not even gotten to their homemade strawberry shortcake by the time of the brief award ceremony. As anyone who goes to the Senior Center knows, Sput Turnbull is an extraordinary cook who looks after her people like a doting mother. She manages to make most everything homemade. That includes mashed potatoes. She once had an army of potato peelers, ladies who would gather around a table most mornings to peel and cut. Those ladies are gone now, but Paul Nimmich carries on. And after he completes his service as potato peeler, he becomes the chief dishwasher. These are the broadest descriptions of what Sput and Paul do at the Senior Center. They give it the heart that keeps people coming. The Community Club’s Community Impact Award recognizes those who have made a singular impact on the life of the Table Rock community. A second award, the Shining Star Awards, is equal in stature and goes to those who have made contributions across more than one aspect of the Community. Suzanne Ellis of Table Rock was the recipient of the first Shining Star award. She received her award before the large crowd gathered for the 80s concert in the Table Rock Square. Suzanne is especially active with the Historical Society but also has assisted with work of the Park Board and the Community Club and has contributed articles about Table Rock events to both the Humboldt Standard and the Pawnee Republican. She serves on the banquet committee for the Table Rock/Table Rock-Steinauer Alumni Association, she assists in the Community Club’s annual fancy-tea fundraiser for the Table Rock Theater and manages the annual community kolache bake. The Community Club is pleased to recognize Sput Turnbull, Paul Nimmich, and Suzanne Ellis as the inaugural recipients of these new awards. |
