A GATHERING OF
MEMBERS OF THE
GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
This precious image, shared by Delores Penkava, is Photo 558. Two men have been identified. John Lehman is identified by a geneolagist on Ancestry.com as the man on the far left, back, also stating that the photograph was taken in1887. Lehman lived until 1941, and by that time was the last Civil War veteran in Pawnee County. Owen Crisler appears in a photograph that surely was taken about the same time; his appearance is unmistakable; he is in the back row, 8th from the left.
Who are the others? Some may yet be identified, as we have photographs of some of our vets at different times in their lives. Do you think you recognize anyone? Go to the bottom of this page to give it a try. Note: It appears that there are about 36 old soldiers in the picture above. It is difficult to tell because there are men standing behind those that are in full view. Their appearance suggests that they are friends peering into the picture while the old soldiers themselves are on display. There are 24 old soldiers in the picture below. But they are G.A.R. post members "and comrades." What does that mean, "and comrades"? Are there members from both posts? Or are all in the pictures old soldiers, with some belong to the GAR Post and the others not? |
the event -- two g.a.r. posts met at sam barnard's grove for a strawberry festival.
the above picture perhaps includes the men of both posts, and the picture below (in which the known table rock men are included) perhaps is limited to table rock men "an"
A list of the men who signed in that day is in an article below. The Table Rock men, as known by 2019 are fewer than the 24 that are in the photo labeled as the John Gere Post. Many may have moved away over time, leaving no record that has been found. Or they may simply not have signed in.
